Skylar was padding silently through twolegpalce looking for something to eat. She stuck to the shadows so she wouldn’t be seen. Chicken and there is a lot of it! She actually smelled food! Skylar hurried toward the scent with; excitement building till she could barely control herself. She rounded a corner feeling her claws skidding on the slimy rock surface. Tall gray and red walls surrounded her and there in the center of the alley was a pile of chicken that a twoleg dropped. Skylar turned out of the alley and pelted to a hole in a rock wall that was her home, and slipped through the opening.
“You’re the last one back, what took you?” a slender gray and brown she cat asked Skylar. “Sorry mother, what took me was I found some food!” Skylar meowed ecstatically. “Where is it?! What is it?!” asked a young silver tabby she cat her green eye gleaming in the half light. “Well,” Skylar meowed flicking her cream striped tail, the brown tip brushing her nose, “Over by the abandon twoleg nest.”
“Oh!”
“Hey, Sky,” asked a young gray tom named Jumper, “Why did it you take so long?”
“Yeah?” agreed his brother, a blue gray tom named Chase.
“Let’s go and get it.” Tomra meowed before Skylar could answer, “All of us this time. Jumper, Chase and Pebble will help me retrieve the food and Skylar will be on watch.”
Jumper, Chase and Pebble were Skylar’s liter mates and they were barely three moons old. Tomra lead the way to the abandon twoleg nest and repeated who was doing what to her little kits. Tomra, then as quiet as a mouse slunk over to the chicken meat lying on the disgusting ground with her little kits following her; copying everything she did. This is going to be easy! Skylar thought. Then she caught a whiff of dog and it was getting stronger by the heartbeat.
“Dogs!” Skylar screeched at the top of her lungs, but it was too late.
Tomra had grabbed the chicken in her mouth and turned to run her kits following her. The dogs attacked two giant brutes. Tomra dropped the chicken and tried to run, but the bigger of the dogs lunged at her grabbing her in it giant drooling jaws and shook her violently. Skylar watched in horror as her mother and liter mates were savagely attacked by the dogs.
One of the dogs had Jumper in its mouth and Chase lunged at it bravely his gray fur bushed out only to be attacked by the other dog. Skylar couldn’t see Pebble, and then she caught a glimpse of silver tabby fur in the mouth of the smaller dog.
No! It wasn’t supposed to happen! Without thinking Skylar leaped into the fray even though they were still kits. She saw that Pebble wasn’t in the big dog’s mouth, she almost collapsed with relief. Skylar lunged at the dog that had Jumper, she tried to slash it with her torn sharp claws, but they slid harmlessly through the dog’s dusky course fur. A small limp blue gray shape was lying at the smaller black and white dog’s feet. Chase! “No! Not Chase!” Skylar screeched and raced to her dead brother’s side.
The dog that had Tomra had flung her to the ground with a sickening thud. She lies very still for a heartbeat or two then she opened her eyes and stared at Skylar. “Skylar run to the forest and don’t look back!” she screeched at her kit. “But I can’t leave you!” Skylar wailed her word catching in her throat and she raced to her mother. When she reached her she pressed her nose into her blood soaked and torn fur. “Go, I want to die knowing that one of my kits survived.” Tomra licked Skylar’s ear one last time, Skylar did the same. “Go Skylar while you have the chance!” With one more look at her mother and liter mates Skylar pelted away to the fence. “I’ll never forget you!” she yowled over her shoulder meaning every word and squeezed under the fence. Her legs felt wobbly from the fight as she pelted blindly through the lush green forest; tripping over roots and brambles tearing at her cream striped fur.
She was exhausted and already missed her family very much. How could she ever forgive herself? She had sent her family to their deaths. Skylar shook her cream head with the brown tabby splash on her muzzle. Her stomach ached; still remembering the nasty scene the she just watched.
After wandering around till dark Skylar’s head was spinning with exhaustion and her whole body was bruised from tripping and falling. Sleep came as soon as she collapsed on a pile of soggy leaves. The next day she awoke a sunhigh; she felt even worse.
Skylar’s tongue felt like it had dried up in her mouth; if she didn’t get water soon, she would die. She tried to swallow but her throat was too dry. Skylar had not the slightest idea how to hunt, so she was starving. Eventually, Skylar tripped on a root; falling right on her face, but she didn’t care because she knew she was going to die anyway. It became such a struggle just to keep her eyes open.
I’m sorry mother, for letting you down and leading you and Jumper, Chase and Pebble to your deaths. Suddenly she felt numbness traveling as fast as a forest fire through her body; she couldn’t feel her legs! Skylar was starting to panic; it felt like the world was getting cold. She felt so dizzy that she thought she was going to throw up. All of a sudden, Skylar felt the world ebbing away from her till she fell unconscious.
