    Power Play

Note: Learn from this, because it could be your story in a matter of minutes.

Well, you have a choice. Destroy this or die. If you keep it, either you will die or you will be glorified. I’m not sure. If you destroy it, you will have to forget about this, not mention it and pretend it never happened. Then you will be the only one alive entrusted with a deadly secret that could get you killed if you tell the wrong person.

This is a story of tragedy, fear, danger and little to no hope.

    Oh, and it’s true.

I hope this teaches you a lesson. If you’re ever given the choice to become an agent, decline. It tends to not pay off and end tragically. Keep a low profile and stay out of the woods. They don’t give this option lightly and will not give up on a potential one easily.

    Lesson learned.

    Chapter one

The night my mom died was probably one of the worse days in my lifetime, despite the fact that I only knew her name and her physical appearance. That was the night it really hit me that I was alone.

And that maybe the reason my mom was a drunk wasn’t just because of my dad. Maybe it was me.

That made me feel really bad, because if she hadn’t been drunk she wouldn’t have been awake at three in the morning. She wouldn’t have been outside by the grainery that I am now positive is haunted. There might not have been a knifed hand waiting for her.

    She might not be dead.

I felt a tinge of guilt as I ran away from my screaming mother. Should I have tried to save her? It was obviously too late for that now. The screams of my mother chased me into the woods that I had never been in. Then I heard something audible.

“Hallie! Your father, he’s-” It was a screech that was cut short. I turned my head to look behind me. Was my father there?

Then I ran into a tree.

    Stupid tree.

I woke up with a pounding headache that was about to explode my head, and was about to yell warning to anyone nearby to take cover, some brown hair and light blue eyes were about to come flying through the air with a loud pop.

Sitting up with leaves crumbling around me, my hand went straight to my forehead, covering a large bump that I could feel was purple. My clothing consisted of a grey long sleeved shirt on and some black athletic shorts that always seemed to make my eyes really gray. I looked around, decided I didn’t want to deal with this right now and layed back down. It was freezing out, and my arms shook like an earthquake, and with each movement my head throbbed.

When I finally stood up, my legs aching, glancing around at my surrounding was my first instinct. A ravine stretched through the tree’s like a snake, dark with shadows of mysterious plants and trees. It was just getting light and I began to wonder if it was the same day or if I had actually been unconscious for a full day.

Deciding it didn’t matter, I went on my way. Then I asked myself.

    Where am I going?

That’s when it hit me, like a snowball to the face on a cold winter morning. Actually, that was what it was. I wiped the wet freezing substance off my aching head, It had alerted me of a new concern, as if I didn’t have enough.

Was it snowing? No, I don’t see any snow, and that was too much to have just fallen. I looked up at the green pine tree I was standing under. Is somebody in the tree above me? I wonder and jerk my head up, searching the pine tree that was lacking low branches. At one point I swore I saw a foot, and a few more chunks of snow fell, but I couldn’t get a good view at the creature up there. Walking in a slow circle around the tree, I was always facing it as I tried to get a good view. The ravine was remembered just in time for my back foot to get too close to the edge of the steep fall. I leaned forward desperately, my arms flailing. Catching my balance, I my foot up to take a step and- Crash! The wet clay I was standing on gave away. Falling like a brick and being seemingly unable to take action to stop my plummet, I thudded onto the ground, my head snapping towards the ground, digging into a sharp rock as I smelled blood and my face felt wet, my leg somehow hurt worse than my head.

This is it. Goodbye, life. I thought as I opened my eyes and picked my head up with effort, trying to see if there was anyone nearby who could have seen that, and I saw a boy look down the ravine in horror and run off. Giving in to unconsciousness once more, my vision went black without another thought.

The nice thing about being unconscious is you feel splendid. Fantastic, even. No pain, no weakness, no sadness, nothing. But sadly, all good things have to come to an end. In my case, I woke up. Sort of. My eyes refused to open, and my arms refused to move. I felt my arm move, and fingers press into my wrist, as if they were checking my pulse. Suddenly I found a tiny bit of strength, and I opened my eyes.

It was really blurry, and at first all I could see was a tan blur. Then it came into focus. A boy was standing over me.

    “She’s awake.” A voice announced.

“Very good.” The answer came from my other side. Water trickled into my mouth. I used up all my strength to swallow, and the water seemed to wake myself up and give me more strength. Slowly, I lifted my left leg, shocked at how heavy it was. My leg bore a colorful cast full of duct tape and vet wrap and two straight poles. And it hurt. Gently setting it down, I spoke.

“Ouch.” My voice sounded as crackly as an autumn leaf, if not worse.

A laugh shook the table as the man next to me cracked up.

    I cleared my throat.

“Where am I?” It was so hoarse It was almost inaudible.

“We’ll get to that later.” The deep voice replied after a pause. “First, who are you?”

I had to think about that. Who was I? Could I trust these people enough with my name?

Than I realized they could have let me die, and yet they didn’t. They saved me.

“My name is Hallie Ryan.” Finally my hoarseness started to clear up.

“Well, Hallie, you are one lucky girl! If Kale hadn’t see-”

“Who are you?” I inturrupted. I hadn’t even realized he was talking.

“I am Brad, and this is my son, Kale.” He replied. “Where are your parents?”

“I dunno, dead?” I trailed off, my strength almost gone. I closed my eyes as a chunk of granola bar was pressed against my mouth. Chewing it seemed like a task, but I did it. Then I fell asleep.

When I woke up again, my strength was back. I felt like I could, like, sit up.

So I did. It was hard work, and I am quite sure now I had help, but boy, was I proud when someone propped pillows under my back so I could sit up. Looking around at my surroundings for the first time, I realized I wasn’t alone. Kale, the boy that had found me, was sitting next to me, a stack of pillows to his right.

“Hey.” He told me tensely, with fake confidence.

I glared at him, all the confusion in my head not even close to being sorted out. I don’t know why I glared at him. Maybe he deserved it. Maybe not. Then I rested my head against the tower of pillows behind me. It was pretty comfy.

“You hungry?” He tried again. My head didn’t move. Slowly I opened my eyes, as if I really didn’t want to but it was necessary.

“Yes.” I didn’t say any more than I had to. Kale got up and walked somewhere out of sight, only to appear a moment later to hand me an opened granola bar and water bottle and then continue his fascinated staring.

I nibbled on the peanut butter flavored granola bar and picked my head up and attempted to drink without using my arms. They were way to shaky. I ended up spilling it all over, but I drank my fill. Soon, the granola bar was gone, as was the water. I rested my head back down and gave into a peaceful sleep, hoping to dream of the fluffly little sheep like last time.

I was a little sore the next day, but hey. Baby steps.

My strength gradually increased until I was only taking two naps outside of night time. I could sit up, eat and drink all by myself. Yeah, It was pretty impressive. I started to talk to them a little. Just the occasional ‘hi’ and ‘bye’ and ‘good morning’. Once I even said goodnight before I fell asleep.

    As I said- Baby steps.
